What is Acupunture?

Acupuncture is one of the components of  the 3,000 year old healing system of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  It involves the insertion of very fine sterile needles into specific acupoints to stimulate and promote the natural self healing process.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on an ancient philosophy that describes the Universe and the Body in terms of two opposing forces, Yin and Yang. When these forces are in balance the body is healthy and functioning to a high potential.

Energy or Qi flows along specific pathways called meridians throughout the body ,  this constant flow of Energy keeps the Yin and Yang forces balanced.  However, if the flow of energy gets blocked, like water getting stuck behind a dam, the disruption can lead to imbalance and illness.

Acupuncture therapy can release blocked qi in the body as well as regulating issues such as stagnation, heat, cold, phlegm and blood stasis which all cause symptoms such as, imbalance of the nervous system, endocrine and immune systems, cardiovascular system and digestive system, and can help resolve pain and improve well being in all areas including women’s health, fertility, digestive issues, headaches, stress and anxiety and plenty more.

What happens during an Acupuncture treatment?

Firstly your acupuncturist will ask about your health history. Then she will examine your tongues shape, colour and coating, feel your pulse and possibly perform some additional physical examinations depending on your individual health needs. This allows an informed diagnosis according to Traditional Chinese Medicine to be made.

Using these unique assessment tools, your acupuncturist  will be able to recommend a personalised treatment plan to address your particular health issues.

The treatment itself will involve lying comfortably on a treatment couch while exact acupuncture points are stimulated by the insertion of needles. In general these needles will be retained for 30 minutes depending on the condition being treated. Your treatment may also include physical therapy, cupping, moxabustion or bioenergetic testing and remedies depending on your treatment plan.

Most people feel no or minimal discomfort as the fine needles are gently inserted. During and after treatments clients often report a deep feeling of relaxation.

How many treatments will I need?

The frequency and number of treatments required differ from person to person. For complex or long standing chronic conditions, one or two treatments per week for some time may be recommended. For acute issues usually fewer visits are required. At Advanced Natural Healthcare we usually advise a course of 6 weekly treatments and then your progress will be re assessed. An individualised treatment plan that includes the expected number of treatments will be discussed during your initial visit.
